MM - Summer Outing

We haven't really had an official family summer outing this year. So I'm posting our escapade last year at the Oxford Hotel in Clark, Angeles City, Pampanga.

We went there with our housechurch-mates and all our kids. We got there with a big jeepney that almost looks like a bus. All the people can't help but look when we pass by them. It was the month of May already, almost past summer, that's why I think we were the only ones occupying the hotel and the pool. We also went shopping around Clark and was able to buy shirts for me and hubby, lightning McQueen bag for Zach and cookies with only P500. All of us really had fun. I missed this group since we moved here in Laguna. But I'm also looking forward to our outings with our new group in the church here.

See more fun here mommy moments

WAAHHHH!

I've lots of things to blog about but got no time. WWAAAHHHHHH!

I really look forward to visit you all soon.

Thanks for being here.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

I read an email from a friend. It's about health, specifically, food, eating habits and other practices. I want to repost it, though maybe most of you have encountered this already coz this is the second time I received this email from different individuals.

The top five cancer-causing food are:

1. Hotdogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Over-eating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying hard with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain

The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.

2. Not urinating in the morning.

3. Over-eating.

4.. Skipping breakfast.

5. Consuming too much medication.

6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.

7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.

8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.

We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.'

Personal Note:
I feel guilty that the food mentioned above are the favorites in our family. Chips, biscuits and cookies are so hard to avoid, though we have lessened buying them compared to before. We have avoided or lessened our consumption of hotdogs, french fries, doughnuts, and the preserved food since moving to our home gave me the floor to think about what to and what not to serve for the family meals. I'm happy that I have taken steps towards more natural ones. I buy chicken fillet to make chicken nuggets instead of buying the ready to cook ones. But I was actually planning to buy "tocino" on our next trip to the grocery. I kinda missed it. The last time I served tocino was last year I think. And then, I was practicing cooking soup instead of frying food. Last time I cooked molo soup, though the kiddos didn't like it much. It's new to them but I'll be serving them some of that again hoping they'll like it next time. Hubby also helps me to go healthy with buying fruits more often and becomes the family's snack so cookies won't have a space in the kids' tummies.

Lacking in stimulating thoughts and talking rarely are two of the causes of brain-damage. You see blogging is healthy coz it gets our brain cells alive. So mommies, keep on blogging!

~ Parenting Style ~

1. Do you exercise full or minimal control over your child’s / children’s behavior?
Yes, I exercise full control over their behavior.

2. Do you expect your child / children to obey 100% or let her / him / them do what pleases her / him / them?
I expect them to obey what I say but I still understand that they are children and will do what they want. They need to be guided from time to time.

3. Do you welcome discussion or you simply set rules?
I ask and let my child explain his side and I think it's important to hear what your child needs to say. From that, I will correct what needs to be corrected.

4. Do you reprimand?
Yes.

5. Do you use spanking for punishment?
Yes, when the need arises. But I don't want to call it as punishment. I do it so that he will remember that disobedience leads to pain. It's like telling him don't jump from the chair and he still does and breaks his leg. disobedience = pain
But before AND after the spanking, I talk to him and explain why am I doing it or why i did it. Most importantly, he needs to understand why.

Proverbs 13:24
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

6. Do you use some kind of a reward System for motivation?
Yes, sometimes. As much as possible I reward them with kisses, hugs and words of encouragement whenever they obey me or do something nice.

7. Do you enjoy being a Parent?
Yes, yes, yes. I love being with them and seeing their silly antics. Though there are times that I get impatient and I become a monster to them. I really feel sorry for those times but I'm learning. I'm trying my best to be more loving and affectionate to both of my sons everyday.

8. Are you a hands-on Parent or do you have a full-time Nanny?
I have someone who helps me in the house and to take care of the children but I stay home so I'm still "hands-on" to my sons.

9. At what age would you let your child make simple decisions for himself / herself?
We let him (my 3 year old son) make simple decisions already. Ex. in a mall, he only has to choose one, wafer stick or the candies.

10.Do you and your Husband have the same Parenting Style?
We thought we both have the same parenting style when it comes to discipline. But in actual, there were lots of times when we disagreed. We felt that things are not working for our budding toddler so we sought advice and talked about it. I'm happy that we are now united with how we discipline our children.

~ Wife Style ~

7. How long have you been married?
approaching 6 years on July 13, 2009. The Scripture that we hold on to since we were still steady dating:

2 Corinthians 1:21-22
21Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

8. How do you feel about being a Wife?
I feel secured. Loved.

9. What has been your typical sleeping attire since you got married?
The nighties is an additional to my wardrobe. I don't wear them everyday (night) though.

10. How do you show how appreciative you are of your Husband?
I always tell him I love him and I always thank him for the things that he do, big or small. I give him a back massage. That's also a time for us to be able to talk about the day.

11. What do you do when your Husband annoys you?
sigh, keep quiet, pray. Then I tell him about it when my emotion has quite subsided already.

12. You are buying or planning to buy your first house as Husband and Wife….
We didn't really plan like this time or that time we'll buy our own house. It just happened that a friend invited us for a tripping. After that, we became interested and visited other properties in different places. Compare, compare, calculate then decided. It's exciting when we were just picking out the lot from the map. There's also a feeling of fear, if we really can pursue with the downpayment and amortizations. But God is so good. We just moved in here last June 2008. Tons of things to fix like we need more shelves and set of curtains, etc.

13. How does your house look like at the end of the day when Hubby gets home?
Before, it's chaos when I still don't have a helper with me. Hubby, tired from work and the long travel needs to pitch in, sweep the floor and tidy up the toys while I cook dinner. He hates to see those mess. But now, he comes home to a clean home. A place of refuge. YEY!

14. How do you feel about running a household?
A queen...most of the time a cook and a milking machine, other times a yaya, a gardener, a police, teacher, G. R. O., doctor, name it! hehe :D

15. What is the sweetest gift you have given your Husband so far?
myself on our wedding night. AAYYY!

Please join us in this tag mommies and wives. Grab it while it's hot!

Homemade Water Filter

We had a surprise visit today. It's my side of the family this time.
And when my Papa is around, it's so so seldom that you will see him not touching the soil. Wait for my next post about our new garden.

When he and hubby started gardening, I don't know why they can't stop even when the sun is at it's hottest. I shouldn't be surprised when hubby was able to finish 900ml water in just one stop. But even though how thirsty a person may be, he can't just drink water from anywhere but the one that passed through water filters. People can just scoop water to drink anywhere but sadly, that was before before. I felt so sad for my son when we passed by a river last week going to the other town. I think that was the first time he saw a river closely and it is too dirty. It's so different from how I encountered rivers before. I was so amazed and delighted everytime we visit the province and see bodies of water. I grabbed the opportunity to explain to him that that's not how rivers are before. When God made rivers, they are clean and people used to drink from it. I told him that rivers became dirty because people are not responsible with their own garbages. And that he should put his trash in the bins and not anywhere.

It's good to be sure that the water we drink is clean. The common practice today is buying purified water from the refilling stations. But do you know that you can make your own water filter at home? Yes, you can have safe, clean water from your own home. I read the article above and I think the materials used are the same with the ones my father used in our home. With that I think making water filter at home is not far-fetched.

Mommy Moments - Siblings / Cousins Bonding

Playing, discovering, learning together, tinkering with the insects and plants, and malling is my sons' bonding time. Their relationship is like cat and dog by the way.

Bonding time with my hubby's side of the family. The kids loved the pool except for Gabe who had trauma coz he was quickly brought into the water.
So far, LJ, sis' eldest is Zach's bestfriend. They both obviously miss each other. Magkasundo sa kulitan. When we visit my mom's these two can't go without the other. That's why going home time means crying time.

The Right Tools On Your Table

Our kids might still be starting on solids right now or still attached with the bottle or your breast (as in my case). And as you observe them eating, it may somewhat appear that they're miles from using silver cutlery on their own. Whether you decide to purchase a set today or 48 years from now, choose for the best pieces with your child in mind (or in tow).

Look. The design should stand the test of time. Keep in mind that you'd be using them forever. Something that you won't trash when the design gets outdated.

Feel. The most important of all. The look needs to be considered but all the more, you need to see if it's comfortable to use. That's why touching and holding the pieces are absolutely necessary. It's good to be stylish but functionality should be on top of the list. It's good if you can let your child try them to know of its usability. Heavy utensils has the feel of class but eating should be relaxing and not stressful.

Materials. Do you want stainless steel, silver plated or sterling silver (usually is made-to-order)? Stainless steel sets are what's commonly used and has the wider range of designs in the market. It's convenient for everyday use as sterling silver and the plated ones need polishing from time to time. The upside though is that silver-plated and sterling resist staining and rusting.
Cutting cheese would be clean and hassle-free with any of these knives. Yet another one that goes in my list of amazing style and function.

Women of the Bible - Sarah

The name Sarah means "Chieftainness" or "Princess".

During her time, names had a significance more than they have today. Sarah was barren in most part of her life. Can you imagine being pregnant and having a child at the age of 90 and your husband 100? And she said,
"God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." - Genesis 21:6

I would probably have also laughed if God tells me I'm going to have a child after 90 years. Because for me, it is impossible. And so Sarah named her son, Isaac, which means "he laughs."

Rachel in great pain and knowing she was dying, named her son Ben-oni, "son of my trouble." But Jacob the loving father that he was, renamed him Benjamin, "son of my right hand." (Genesis 35:16-20) Perhaps, Jacob understood that the name his son bears might make the plot of his future forever.

Throughout the Bible, you will notice that the names that God gives his people puts significance and worth to him.
Subconsciously though, we have somehow adapted God's character, naming our kids of good meaning and significance to our life.

Virgil Zachary
Virgil - derived from hubby's dad's name Virgilio. Virgil alone means strong.
Zachary - remembered by God

Winter Gabriel
Winter - from his dad's name, interchanged Erwin and put "T" in the middle
Gabriel - We chose this name coz this is the name of the angel that God sent for Mary to tell that she’s going to bear a child and that is Jesus. It means God is my strength.

I was surprised that both of my sons' names connotes strength. No wonder they are energetic kids.

I only found out now that the meaning of my name, Jonalyn, is lucky angel. How sweet to hear that.

Do you know the meaning of your name? How do you feel about it?

No matter what your name is, God knows it. He calls to us by our name.

But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
- Isaiah 43:1

My New Look

Do you like my new look?

I'm already feeling the heat of the summer so I decided to have this do. I heard that our weather temp is a little bit like living in one of the Arizona homes.

It's been a while since I had this hair. I quite missed it. The first time i had this hair was when I got pregnant with my eldest. Then seeing Pia Magalona lately on tv made me miss having this hair. I admit I somehow admire her for being the person who she is despite the death of her most loved one Francis M. To us who are feeling sad that we have lost a music icon, to her it's a bestfriend, a companion, a husband that she lost.

Anyway, it's summer once again and the thought of vacationing makes me feel alive. With the warm climate, who could resist taking a mid-day dip in an inviting swimming pool just outside of the living room?

Mommy Moments - Sleeping Time

I've posted this photo before but I want to share it once again. When Gabe was about 5 months old, he had the habit of going under his dad's armpit when he feels sleepy. He discovered a comfort zone. I so love this photo!

Daytime sleep is one of the necessary activities for children. And I love this time because that's when I could do my personal things. Sometimes these things include having my nap time too.

Zach had this mickey lovey given to him by his lola since he was 1 year old. He can't sleep without it until now.

I love to just scrutinize parts of their body when they're asleep.

Web Hosting Geeks

I received our latest credit card bill last week. I was shocked with what I saw. A $34 billing for web hosting. I was just thankful that hubby was the one who registered the account using our card. But I was just as disappointed when I knew (and my suspicions were correct) that he was not able to use the said domain. And now the company is billing us for the renewal of a service that we were not able to use. We are not sure if we can still cancel coz it was automatically billed to our card. How it happened, that, I need to also find out.

Hubby regrets to have signed up for that. He should have consulted web site hosting reviews first. The webhostinggeeks.com is not only a listing of the best web hosting services available in the market but it includes reviews, news, trends and discussions about the industry. If you're wise enough then you will visit their blog when planning to get a web hosting service.

Thanks to the geeks we won't be naive again about the web industry.

All About Eve

As I have mentioned last time, I will be sharing with you my journey with the book "Women of the Bible." I learned that March is Women's Month so I became more eager to know that my series of this book here in my blog is so timely.

Of course, let's start with the very first woman in the world, Eve.

As we all know, she's the "mother of all the living" (Genesis 3:20). Her name means "life-giving." But we also know that she was the first one to disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. She had everything she needed in Paradise. Imagine the setting....abundant food, fresh air, flowing water, best weather that doesn't dry her skin. And of course, Adam, the best man in her eyes. I can't imagine how good-looking he was coz in the bible it says "God created man in his own image..." (Genesis 1:27). So for me, it was a big WHY?

This is one of the saddest stories in the bible. And this is the history of man. Maybe it's not the first time that the serpent tempted Eve and lastly worn her down that's why she fell. If I would become Eve, would I have done the same? I don't know. I've committed mistakes in my life too because of my selfishness. I decided to stop blaming her coz who am I to judge her? I decided to be grateful for her, realizing that she's also my mother.

She was the first one who experienced all the firsts.
She was the first woman to conceive a child. How did she cope with the events of her first trimester? How did she go about the changes that's happening to her own body? Can you imagine yourself in her shoes, giving birth without the help of a doctor, midwife or even another woman to at least guide her? I felt a bond with Eve when I thought of childbearing. All the mothers throughout the centuries share this common bond. The pain of labor (in my case it's more of emotional pain of fear and nervousness because of my heart disease) which is an earthly experience, of Eve herself - "with pain you will give birth to children..."(Genesis 3:16). But after that, the bond between you and your baby, is unearthly. Something that only God could create.

We also know that Cain, her first son became the first murderer and Abel, her second son, the victim. I couldn't imagine myself in a situation like this. Sadness filled her life. Yet God lifted her up with a promise. She gave birth to her third son, Seth. God's grace restored Eve. She still won over the serpent.

When you're at your lowest today, remember God's promise of grace for Eve and for all of us.

But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 5:20-21

I'm Back!

I think this is not the first time I announced that here in my blog.

We had a problem again with our internet connection. They fixed it just today. And I'm happy how faster the connection is now. Hope it stays the same or everything else fails. This caused my hubby's boss to make him report again in the office every Fridays. The upside though is that I could use the internet on Fridays. But I think i liked more that hubby is here during that day.

Anyway, what's important is I'M BACK! So look forward to seeing more of me around.

Women of the Bible

I've been reading the book "Women of the Bible." This was the book that hubby gave me last Valentine's Day. I want to share with you the joy of learning through the women in the Scriptures.

At first glance, I thought my reading of this book will be just as ordinary. But later on, I was humbled. Coz lately, I realized that I was beginning to get inspired to know that even if these women lived millions of years ago, yet they have the same experiences and struggles as mine today. Sometimes I find myself having the same heart with one of the women in the Bible.

I'd be sharing my thoughts to you from time to time as I go through the book.

Let's get inspired together.

Honey, sorrowy for my not being open to you that I wasn't excited with the book at the start.

Better Now

Yey! I'm well now. I really hate the feeling of being sick. Who likes it anyway? Except when I was a kid I remembered. I quite like it when I get sick coz people in our home are extra caring especially my mom of course. And I can't can't forget Royal True Orange! They always let me drink Royal true orange when i'm sick. I still don't know the reason why. Do you? That's why when I was small, ahh...young, sometimes I like it when I get sick. Teehee :D

Things I wasn't able to do while I was sick:

- blog much. I was able to bloghop and comment just a little but was too lazy to think and write a post.

- cook last monday.

- attend a bestfriend's bridal shower. wuhuhuhu...

Another good news...our internet connection is also better now. woohoo! Thank you technical guys for visiting us once again.

Now, I wish for more time and energy to READ and WRITE.

Not So Well

I woke up at 4:30AM today. Feels like I'm going to have a flu. I feel hot inside and my muscles are aching. We went to church yesterday then had lunch together in one of our peer couple's home. We had fun talking until we noticed it's 5PM already. Then I felt my back aching while I was taking a rest at home. I didn't get to breastfeed my little boy the whole day coz we didn't bring him along. I got full aching breasts. I suspect and hope that's the only reason why I don't feel good.

But here I am still blogging and surfing the net!

I've been reading about blog aggregator hosting. From what I understand, it's like a website with a portal-like user interface where you can submit your blog posts. You may subscribe to a community of your interest and receive newsfeeds as a whole instead of picking out blogs for you to read on. I've been really looking for sites like this where my blog can be listed. What's good is that you can ask that included weblogs in your community aggregator will only be of your interest. I'll make my own aggregator later on coz I can't think of a cool title.

Hitting the sack for now.
