Mother Maltreats a Young Boy

According to a late night documentary program on tv, there are more than 10,000 children who are physically abused in the Philippines.

One of them they called "Jepoy" (not his true name) , 4 years old (not his true age, JOWK!) is maltreated by his own mother. A concerned neighbor who reported to the authorities in Tanza, Cavite said that he always hears beatings from the next door where the family lives. It's so disheartening to see the young boy's face and body covered with wounds, scars and bruises. One of his legs is swelling and the other thigh has marks of a fresh burn. The authorities found the boy lying on his stomach with a sack of rice on his back, head covered with bed sheet and his feet tied on a pole inside their house.

The mother denies that she maltreats the young boy and said that his wounds are already there when he came back from the province two months ago. According to her, the burn is caused by a hot coffee that was accidentally spilled on the boy's thigh. The boy's older sister though couldn't lie when she answered that she pinches the boy when she becomes angry of him. She also told authorities that the boy keeps on rummaging the pans to look for food and she doesn't want him doing that that's why she tied him and put sack of rice on his back. The boy's father said that he doesn't know anything about it since he stays most of the time in his workplace and doesn't see what happens at home which is obviously another unacceptable reason to the authorities.

When examined, the boy was found to have severe malnutrition, lots of abrasions, burns and his deformed head still needs to be scanned. The representative of the Department of Social Welfare and Development said that the elder sister may have been hurting her brother because that's what she sees from how their mother treats the boy.

The mother will stay in jail for 7 years while the boy is in the custody of the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development for his physical, emotional and mental healing.

After watching this, I realized that I am so privileged to have an opportunity to take care of my kids with guidance from the Bible and the people around me and by God's grace everyday.

I pray that the mother and the boy will really heal after this sad event.
